In 1998, non-governmental organization FIRST and LEGO Group united and created international program FIRST LEGO League (FLL), and a bit later FIRST LEGO League Jr. (FLL Jr.)
Mission of both programs is to show students and teachers: the world of science and technology is very interesting and amazing! The international program is based on the principle «learning through action», which is an exciting way for students to develop ideas and have fun!
The program FLL Junior is created for children 6-10 years old and FLL is considered to be for children 9-16 years old.
At the beginning of each year, teams from all over the world receive the Challenge, which they have to solve during 3-6 months and present their decision on the festival. Each year the Challenge is devoted to the specific actual science problem. The sphere of these problems is very various and include such topics as, for ex., global warming, helping elder people, world class, etc. The topic of the last season was devoted to nature and was called “Trach Trek”. The topic of new 2016-2017 season is “Animal allies”.
The team consists of 2-10 students and can be formed at any educational institution. When the team is formed, children start to learn the topic of the season and create their innovative ideas.
What does Challenge consist of?
Challenge for the program FIRST LEGO League Jr. (6-10 years old) consist of:
- Learning the topic and choosing 1 problem for deeper analysis;
- Analysis of the chosen problem;
- Creating innovative way of solution;
- Building LEGO-model;
- Creating poster;
- Being friendly and helping each other.
Challenge for the program FIRST LEGO League (9-16 years old) consist of:
- Learning of the topic and choosing 1 problem for deeper analysis;
- Analysis of the chosen problem;
- Creating innovative way of solution;
- Making a presentation of the innovative solution (The Project);
- Creating the Robot (based on the set LEGO Mindstorms EV3/NXT/RCX);
- Programming the Robot to perform the tasks on the special field.
What does team need to participate?
In program FIRST LEGO League Junior (6-10 years old):
- Any LEGO bricks
- Motivation!
In program FIRST LEGO League (9-16 years old):
- LEGO Set – LEGO Mindstorms EV3/NXT/RCX
- Special field
- Motivation!
Today, there is more than 60 schools in Ukraine, which prepare teams and take part in annual Festival!
